Lagos boxing coaches shelve protest for
unpaid allowance

Lagos – Boxing coaches in Lagos State said on
Wednesday that they had shelved their proposed
protest over unpaid allowances.
The coaches’ Spokesman, Daniel Adekunle-Fasiso,
told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that
the protest was shelved because of the intervention
by Mr Olawale Edun.
Edun is a former Commissioner of Finance in Lagos
State and the Chairman, Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame promotes the monthly Lagos
Boxing Show, organised by the Lagos State Boxing
Association on every last Saturday of the month.
Adekunle-Fasiso claimed in Lagos that the protest
was to compel the organisers of the monthly boxing
competition to pay their due allowances after the
last edition of the tournament.
He alleged that the coaches were short-changed
after the Governor’s Belt competition on Dec. 26
last year.
Adekunle-Fasiso said the coaches who groomed
boxers for the popular boxing show were given only
N25, 000 to share after the competition.
“We know that the state and Edun, who is the
symbol of the competition, could not have given us
that paltry sum.
“It is the plan of a few corrupt officers in the
administrative chain to short-change us.
“If not for Edun who got wind of the protest and
arranged to meet with the coaches for a peace talk,
the protest would have commenced,” the coach
said.
He added that the amount was far below the
expectation of the coaches who rejected the money.
However, Ewa Henshaw, the Secretary, Adopt-A-
Talent Programme of the Lagos State Grassroots
Sports Development, told NAN that the allegation
was unfounded.
Henshaw said the coaches had no specific amount
to be paid to them during such competitions.
He advised the coaches to always be objective and
ensure they put in their best in the service of the
state and the nation at large. (NAN)
