The Sokoto State Commissioner for Social Welfare
and Culture, Alhaji Zubairu Yari, said the state
government would evacuate, treat and rehabilitate
50 lunatics from the streets of Sokoto metropolis.
Yari told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in
Sokoto on Tuesday that the mentally-ill persons
would be treated at the Federal Neuro Psychiatric
Hospital in Kware, Sokoto State.
He said that the exercise would be conducted in 10
phases and five persons would be evacuated to
ensure that the hospital facility was not over-
stretched.
The commissioner said the 23 local governments
would be involved in the evacuation of the lunatics,
which would commence soon.
He said the exercise would restore sanity in the
streets of Sokoto, adding that the gesture was to
reintegrate them with their families through their
local councils.
According to him, the state government will also
assist the beneficiaries with grants to start various
trades after their discharge from the hospital.
“This is to facilitate their integration into the
society,’’ he said. (NAN)
